Get to know your instructional team below.

The surest way to position yourself for success in a career in technology and management is to discover the type of work that allows you to be at your best, and the type of problems you are most passionate about solving.

During Fall 2021, Samantha Koon taught BADM 261 along with Stephanie Brand, Grace Levita, Jack Gitschlag, and Ramya Gandhi as the Course Assistants. Here are some reflections they have:

The T&M Seminar opened my eyes to all of the possibilities available for careers at the crossroads of engineering and business! It was inspiring to hear from the T&M alumni and corporate sponsors who came to speak to us about their experiences. The seminar was key in developing my professional brand and I would recommend it to any student with an interest in learning from leaders across industries!

Ramya Gandhi, BADM 261 Course Assistant

Joining the team this year are Aleksina Jovic and Arvin Sam. They are both students in the T&M Seminar Fall 2021, and they are now a part of T&M Class XXVIII. Here are their thoughts on the seminar course:

Being in the T&M Seminar was an amazing experience! I really enjoyed getting to know the corporate sponsors and their company values. I was able to get a glimpse of the T&M program and meet fellow pears in both engineering and business. I also felt like I greatly developed many professional skills through the corporate sponsored events. Overall, great experience!

Aleksina Jovic, BADM 261 Course Assistant

The BADM 261 seminar course has taught me a lot about technology and management in very different industries. I have gained a robust understanding of the diverse decision-making principles companies adopt to persevere through disruptions and shifts in the innovation economy. I have gained a plethora of professional skills and interpersonal attributes that have given me a great headspace when interviewing and applying to companies. I attribute a lot of my professional success and accomplishments to my learnings from the BADM 261 T&M Seminar!

Diversity & Inclusion in the Workplace

By: Ximena Castillo

I knew that I was going to learn a lot as part of the T&M Seminar class but I didn’t realize the amount and breadth of topics I would learn about. As a technology and management seminar, I was excited to see the type of presentations that companies would deliver and I can easily say that I was not disappointed. Some companies took this time to explain more about what they do, others dove into their sustainability efforts, and a few went into detail on niche products; I learned something new from every presentation. However, I was happily surprised when a presentation focused on diversity and inclusion. As a double-minority myself, a Hispanic woman in STEM, I really appreciated that this topic was considered important enough to be highlighted.

Engineering and Its Emotions

By: Feyza Baysal

Be The Representation You Desire to See

It was Quad Day and I was looking for an engineering club to join. I passed by “Eco-Illini Supermileage” and I was intrigued because it was the perfect blend of environmentalism and engineering that I was looking for(despite having no prior knowledge about cars). I stood in a long line to sign up, composed almost entirely of white or asian males. I remember standing there with confidence, but it was all a facade. Internally I felt intimidated and afraid. It’s hard not to when you’re a 5’0 ft tall female hijabi amongst a crowd of “car guys”. I remember going home and Googling the club to see if there were any females on the team. Amongst all the pictures I found one image with one female in it. As superficial as it seems that one image gave me hope. Hope that I will be accepted and treated equally.

The Revolution That Is 5G

By: Maya Acevedo

I have always been fascinated with the way things worked. The structures, processes, operations, and innovations of the modern-day world provided me with a curiosity that could not be quelled. Throughout my life, I have always loved finding the answers to my never-ending questions. Technology was no exception. I would watch the annual keynote presentation that Apple hosted, astonished by how they could constantly find more innovative ways to grow their products year after year. That feeling was what I experienced while sitting in the Alice Campbell Alumni Center for the Hallene Lecture, listening to Ron Marquardt who is the Vice President of Advanced Technologies & Innovation at T-Mobile. He spoke about a new technology that was slowly breaking into the market: 5G.

Revolutionary Thinking

By: Darsh Gupta

Growing up as a child, I had a difficult time understanding what my father’s occupation was. When asked to explain what my father does for work, I would always respond with “He’s a businessman!” Not that the former is not true, however, this categorization for my father’s line of work was extremely broad. As I matured, I came to a better understanding of what my father’s background is and how that connected to his field today. In brief, he attended India’s Institute of Technology (IIT), pursuing a computer science degree, and later earned his MBA. And today, he works at Abbott within their IT department as a senior manager as a part of their BSS Operations Planning and License Management team.

Learnings From Taking the T&M Seminar Course

By: Courtney Williams

Coming into college, I knew that I wanted to study entrepreneurship in hopes of learning more about what it takes to be a successful business owner. I knew that I wanted to take courses in entrepreneurship and participate in activities that will provide me with more insight on how to properly run a business. I learned about the T&M Seminar class during the second semester of my Freshman year when I was invited to apply for it. I was not sure if I should apply for the seminar because I was under the impression that it was not useful or beneficial for my major. However, as a business student, I did not know much about the technology/ engineering side of running a company, so I decided to apply for the seminar. This seminar was not a disappointment! Some of the key takeaways/learnings that were present from this seminar are the following:

“What’s Your Dream Job?”

By: Saloni Garg

I still remember sitting in class as a young third grader, being handed a personality questionnaire on the first day of school. I sped through it, writing down my favorite color (mint green, of course), favorite food, favorite hobby etc. until I got to a question that I wasn’t quite sure how to answer: “What’s your Dream Job?” At the time, I thought back to my parents –a software engineer and business owner. Instead of writing down one of these, however, I chose to write “Ice Cream Truck Driver.” Now, that was a fair answer considering I was just a third grader at the time. Through the years, however, I began seeing and hearing this question everywhere in different forms –“What do you want to be when you grow up?”, “What are you thinking about majoring in?”, “Where do you want to work”, “Why are you passionate about this role at our company?”, the list goes on. As the wording of this question changed, so did my response -from ice cream truck driver to entrepreneur, business-owner, mechanical engineer, software developer, teacher, and finally computer engineer (for now).

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion • ish

By: Mark Cruse

In the professional world today, Black people make up 8% of all white-collar jobs. (NBC News) For those who don’t understand the meaning of this number, allow me to explain. In America, Black buying power is a large factor in our overall GDP as a nation. Cheryl Grace, Nielsen’s Senior Vice President, states: “At 47.8 million strong and a buying power that’s on par with many countries’ gross domestic products, African Americans continue to outpace spending nationally” (Wright, Newsone, 2020) But the question that always arises in my head, is if Black people make up such a large percentage of the purchasing of products and services, why are so little of us involved in its creation?

1,947,792 Containers to the Landfill. 0 were Recycled. All in University Housing Alone. During the Fall 2020 semester at the University of Illinois, University Dining Services discarded millions of containers. All of which went straight to the landfill. Every meal, students were given a plastic bag, plastic bottle, plastic clamshells, plastic utensils, and paper containers. The only thing that students might have recycled was the plastic bottle–University Recycling would not accept anything else.

By: Nicole Lee

As a Business major, I was first uncertain whether this T&M seminar will be beneficial tome or not. However, at the same time, I didn’t want to lose this precious opportunity that was given to me in which I can expand my knowledge outside of the business world and learn more about the technology and engineering aspects of businesses. Now that we successfully ended the seminar class, I can confidently say that this class deeply diversified my experiences and allowed me to grasp a countless amount of insightful information from each company and each speaker I encountered during the course of this seminar. In this blogpost, I want to share some of the main key takeaways I have from this class.
